Bucharest-Giurgiu high-speed road enters design phase
The development of the first high-speed road designed at the Romanian–Bulgarian border has officially moved into the feasibility study phase, marking a major milestone for the Bucharest–Giurgiu route. The technical documentation is scheduled to be completed within 16 months and will serve as the foundation for the next stages of the project.
The National Road Investment Company signed the preliminary design contract in December 2025 with a Romanian–Turkish engineering consortium. The project is financed through European funds, with a total contract value of approximately 34 million lei.
The feasibility study will assess whether the new road should be developed as a motorway or an express road, will evaluate alternative route options and will define how the new infrastructure will integrate with other major investments, including the future Danube bridge between Giurgiu and Ruse.
Special attention will be given to technical solutions, including a comparative analysis between cement concrete and bitumen pavement systems, as well as the origin of construction materials, whether sourced domestically or imported.
Once completed, this strategic project is expected to significantly enhance road connectivity between Romania and Bulgaria, supporting modern transport flows and regional economic integration.
